Blog: Ultherapy® Basics – everything you need to know

3 February 2023

Ultherapy Basics.

When should I start Ultherapy®?

Ultherapy® targets the skin and is a non-invasive treatment. So, for any adult, Ultherapy® can be a part of your beauty regime. And while you shouldn’t need it if you’re blessed with ridiculously youthful skin, there are still plenty of Ultherapy® patients in their 30s. Our practitioners have welcomed patients in their 70s too – because it’s never too late to give your collagen and elastin some new spark! So you could start Ultherapy® when you feel that you would like natural-looking results that improve over time and that you would benefit from the gold standard in skin tightening treatment – all without surgery.

Is Ultherapy® done by an aesthetician? / Who can perform Ultherapy®?

Ultherapy® is the only non-invasive skin tightening treatment with real-time visualisation to be cleared by the FDA – the US regulatory authority on medical devices. This treatment should be conducted by a properly trained aesthetician. Merz Aesthetics UK and Ireland run training courses for all their practitioners and clinics so that they operate authorised equipment and know how to use it for optimal results. There’s a network of highly-trained Ultherapy® experts across the country, so you shouldn’t have to travel too far for a fresh, natural look brought to you by a trained professional.

How long does Ultherapy® treatment take? / How much time do I need for Ultherapy®?

That depends on how much you would like to do in one session. A typical Ultherapy® session usually lasts for around 60-90 minutes and will target treatment in one area (e.g. face, neck, décolletage). Some treatments can be faster – a brow lift can take only 30 minutes. You may choose to have the procedure on more than one part of the face or décolletage in the same session, and that’s fine: Ultherapy® is minimally invasive, so there’s normally minimal recovery time. Afterwards you can usually get right back to your day.

What does Ultherapy® feel like?

During the treatment, micro-focused ultrasound is used to target specific areas at precise depths under the skin with a thermal effect (which jump-starts your body’s own process for producing fresh, new collagen and elastin). Ultherapy® is visually targeted by your aesthetician to maximise collagen stimulation while minimising any additional coverage, so while it’s likely your skin will feel hot, sensations can be minimised. If you’re worried, many practitioners routinely offer a range of pain management options before your Ultherapy® treatment begins.

What aftercare will I need? / Do I need time off after Ultherapy®?

You won’t normally need to take time off after an Ultherapy® treatment – you can usually get straight back to your everyday life. There’s no staying in bed, no formal recovery period and no designated aftercare regime. In fact, there’s usually minimal downtime. You may experience some tenderness below the skin, and many practitioners therefore recommend that you stick to a lighter skincare regime for a few days (gentle cleansers, for example). But that’s usually it – unlike an invasive treatment, you can usually resume your normal activities immediately, without having to follow any post-treatment measures.

How long does it take to see results from Ultherapy®? / When will I see results from Ultherapy®?

Ultherapy® kickstarts the production of new collagen and elastin – your body’s own skin-tightening stimulus – from deep below the skin’s surface. It takes around 3 to 6 months for the collagen to get to work and for you to start seeing results (that in itself is individual to your own body). But once your collagen production process has been stimulated, it remains activated for a significant period of time: most patients report seeing results up to and beyond a year after treatment.

How many Ultherapy® sessions will I need? / How often do I need Ultherapy®?

This all depends on your individual skin quality to start with. But also, it’s a matter of personal choice. Ultherapy provides proven results in a single treatment for most patients, which can be seen in as little as 12 weeks. And because Ultherapy® is non-invasive, you can start and stop as you wish, to suit both your skin and your budget; many patients therefore see the effect on one part of the face and choose to continue with other parts. That’s the beauty of a highly targeted and specialised treatment. You’re always in charge.

How long does Ultherapy® last? / Is Ultherapy® permanent?

A single treatment is usually all that’s needed to start seeing natural-looking results. How long Ultherapy® lasts depends on your body, your age, the natural composition of your skin and many other factors. Ultherapy® doesn’t last forever (after all, nothing does…) but a panel of experts agreed, that 12-to-18-month treatment intervals are generally effective for maintaining the desired effect. We never advise over-treatment, and those with naturally better skin quality will need less frequent Ultherapy® sessions.
